---- D=09-Jul-1992 A=Ross Williams S=A message about the suspension of FunnelWeb development. K=funnelweb development suspension support ---- FUNNELWEB SUSPENSION OF DEVELOPMENT =================================== On 9 July 1992, after months of intensive FunnelWeb development, I (Ross Williams) felt so overwhelmed by all the work that the public release of FunnelWeb was generating that I personally abandoned the project by emailing the message reproduced below to all those on the FunnelWeb mailing list. I have since recovered my composure and have decided to devote a small amount of time per week to FunnelWeb. This will not be enough to sustain any kind of sensible development or support, but I will endeavor to make good use of the time by promoting FunnelWeb and coordinating communication between its users. Ross Williams. ross@spam.adelaide.edu.au 9 October 1992. Note: The colonization of comp.doc was a complete failure and the FunnelWeb users fell apart as a group. As at 9 October 1992, I intend to establish a FunnelWeb mailing list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear FunnelWeb Users, I have decided to suspend all FunnelWeb development indefinitely. I just don't have the time. The comments and suggestions that you have sent me have been filed somewhere safe and will be reviewed if I ever have another burst at FunnelWeb development. Meanwhile, the best thing is probably if "you all talk among yourselves for a while" :-). To this end, I've compiled a list of all the people who have emailed me about FunnelWeb which I have included at the end of this message. Judging from the email I received, FunnelWeb users could cooperate to: * Trade tips on porting FunnelWeb to different machines (including the PC version which I stuffed up in my release). * Talk about various uses for FunnelWeb. * Talk about different typesetter output formats (e.g. RTF). * Determine other new features commonly desired. * Possibly coordinate a GNU breakout (see FW Hacker's Manual). It would be nice to create a newsgroup for FunnelWeb discussions, as this would avoid mailing list hassles and might pull in new users not already on the mailing list. However, creating a new newsgroup takes slightly less time than building an Egyptian pyramid (I know - I've created two newsgroups) and so a better short term solution is to colonize a newsgroup. I looked around, and comp.doc has had very little traffic (161 messages total) and so I thought of colonizing it. However, it is moderated and so postings might not get through. I suggest that we try to colonize comp.doc anyway. My recommendation is: * Everyone subscribe to comp.doc. * Post messages about FunnelWeb to comp.doc. If the moderator bounces them or they don't appear quickly, send them to the mailing list below. * If this doesn't work, perhaps one of you can set up an email address that will forward to this mailing list. I don't have the sysadmin power to set such a thing up on my machine. Thanks for your interest in FunnelWeb. I will still be happy to receive comments and suggestions, but will be unable to act on them in the foreseeable future.
